Measure what is actually available
For the practical layout example, we use a measured internal space of 2 × 3 m. A 60 cm central path leaves 70 cm on each side. Keep 40 cm depth free at the front for entering; the two growing strips then measure 70 × 260 cm. These are our own calculated dimensions. Test them with the actual user and watering can before fixing beds. Rimol supports including routes and reach from the outset.
Measure internal dimensions, door, openings and fixed structural parts. Draw to scale and mark windows or film sides that must open. Keep entrance routes clear and test path width with your equipment. Wheelbarrows, harvest baskets and watering cans need different turning space from an empty hand. Distinguish soil beds, pots and temporary seedlings. Commercial greenhouse layouts inspire, but their wide benches and routes are not compulsory in a small hobby greenhouse.
Plan for mature plants and shade
Record growth habit and space needs for each crop. Tall tomatoes or climbers can shade low plants, and crowded benches permanently shade beds. Position crops according to your light. Keep vents accessible and storage clear of them. A movable seed bench can free room for larger crops later. Do not hang heavy pots or frames from greenhouse structures without suitable fixing information. Available floor and structure determine safe, usable choices.
Lay out the arrangement loosely first
For the example greenhouse, mark a 60 cm central route and 40 cm clear entrance space first. The two growing strips start behind this front area, each measuring 70×260 cm. Walk the care route with your actual watering can and test reaching the rear corner. Adapt it if door, user or equipment needs more space. This is our own example, not a universal accessibility standard. Keep water lines off the route and window handles accessible.
Test during growth and warm weather
Review layout as plants enlarge. Move temporary parts before paths disappear and adjust supports. Check airflow and temperature in sun; tidy drawings do not prevent overheating. Water according to crop and roots, checking system distribution. Record difficult harvesting and mutual crowding for next season. Good greenhouse layouts remain flexible, while access, safe fixings and working ventilation stay essential.

Parts of the example
Our own dimensioned example for a 2 × 3 m greenhouse; layout principles based on Rimol and ventilation management on RHS. These are not source-defined standard dimensions or accessible-path standards.
| Part | Number | Dimensions / version |
|---|---|---|
| Internal space in your own calculation example | 1 | 2000 × 3000 mm |
| Central path in your calculation example | 1 | 600 × 3000 mm; geschiktheid zelf met gieter en gebruiker testen |
| Clear space at the front | 1 | 2000 × 400 mm |
| Growing strips on the left and right | 2 | 700 × 2600 mm, vanaf 400 mm achter de ingang |
Common mistakes
- Filling every space with young plants
- Blocking ventilation windows
- Blindly copying commercial dimensions
Working safely
- Load the greenhouse frame only according to structural information.
- Keep the door and route clear.
- Position heavy elements stably.
How to do it
- Measure actual interior space, door swing, windows and fixed connections.
- In a 2 × 3 m greenhouse, mark a 60 cm central path and 40 cm front space; adapt the example to your greenhouse.
- Walk the marked space with a watering can or required tool and test access to both strips.
- Arrange crops by mature height, light needs and variety spacing; keep windows and controls accessible.
