Growing Boltardy: round, red beetroot in a bed or pot

Boltardy forms round, dark red beetroot and, according to RHS, resists bolting. Read how to choose a site, assess seedlings and plan a useful harvest, with separate advice for a spacious pot.

A good start

Sowing under cover and raising seedlings

Sow directly or in modules · Beetroot

March–April for an early startSow in bright, sheltered conditions in modules; do not keep young plants in a warm room for long.

Germination and temperature
Do not start in persistently cold soil; early cold can encourage bolting.
After emergence
Give seedlings light immediately after emergence. A dark loft needs suitable grow lights; warmth alone is insufficient. Ventilate and keep the compost moist without saturating it.
Pricking out and potting on
You can sow in modules and plant out with the root ball. A seed cluster can produce several seedlings; thin appropriately.
Hardening off and planting out
Gradually acclimatise indoor-raised plants to sun, wind and outdoor temperatures; shelter them again on cold nights. Plant out small, sturdy root balls without pulling the roots apart.

Early sowing needs a suitable bolt-resistant cultivar. Choose the growing aim: baby leaves or beetroot.

How to grow beetroot

The options below belong to the plant. From these, choose the method that suits your variety's growth habit.

A row for root harvesting

A manageable row makes thinning and staggered harvesting easy.

  1. Sow thinly at the variety's depth.
  2. Check whether several plants emerge from one seed cluster.
  3. Give growing roots space and harvest a few at a time.

For different root shapes and a larger harvest.

Round beetroot in a wide pot

Round root forms often fit containers better than long beetroot.

  1. Choose a wide pot with drainage.
  2. Sow a small portion in suitable potting compost.
  3. Thin and keep the pot evenly moist.

What sets Boltardy apart?

RHS confirms round dark red roots and bolting resistance. This reduces, not eliminates, flower-stem tendency. Choose deliberately for round beetroot. Record the full name at sowing to connect observations to the correct selection.

Assess the bed first

Sun, fertile well-drained soil match the RHS profile. Walk the planned bed before sowing: where does rain stand and where will you maintain plants? Reserve reachable space. Small trial plots ease comparison and harvesting more than unmarked long rows.

Make container growing a deliberate choice

RHS Plants gives about five seeds in a forty-five-centimetre pot, a concrete Boltardy example rather than a universal recipe. Measure your container and inspect drainage. Choose a care-accessible position beforehand; moving full pots is awkward.

Choose direct sowing or modules

General RHS guidance allows direct beetroot sowing or modules. Much beetroot seed is clustered and can produce several seedlings. Observe actual emergence. Record the method to judge another attempt under comparable conditions better.

Give young plants suitable space

The supplier gives about ten centimetres between growing plants. When thinning, choose which to grow on. Distinguish small beetroot for immediate use from roots for larger harvests. Leafy rows alone do not prove good beetroot yields.

Avoid major moisture fluctuations

Utah State University links irregular moisture with cracking and growth problems. Check beds or pots during drought and after rain. Record findings before attributing problems to Boltardy. Soil, care and variety interact; one poor root reveals little about a whole selection.

Plan to use the leaves too

The RHS says young leaves are edible. General guidance says leave enough during interim picking: at least four or five leaves per plant. Decide which beetroot to use that week before harvesting. Record leaves and roots separately to compare both.

Select undamaged beetroot for storage

Harvest carefully and separate damaged carrots. Utah State describes cold, moist storage without foliage. Apply to available space and check quality throughout. Record immediate use and usable stored amounts to plan for your household rather than promised yield.
